Sharon D. Clarke will reprise her starring role in the Chichester Festival Theatre's Olivier award-winning production of Tony Kushner’s Caroline, Or Change transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season at The Playhouse Theatre this November following a sell-out run at the Hampstead Theatre.
Lake Charles, Louisiana, 1963. The destruction of a local Confederate statue might just signal that change is in the air, but, whatever the progress of the civil rights movement, for poorly paid African-American maid Caroline Thibodeaux things seem just the same.
Toiling endlessly amidst the piles of laundry in the sweltering basement of the middle-class Gellman household, Caroline is often joined by eight year old Noah Gellman, who is struggling with the recent death of his mother and his father's remarriage. But when the new Mrs Gellman comes up with a way for single mother of four Caroline to take home a little more cash, the consequences for Caroline and Noah’s relationship are not what anybody might have expected…
